About Us

Dock Workers Union was founded in 1954 and is a democratic organization. According to the Union’s constitution, the main objective for its formation was to secure the complete organization in the Union of all workers employed in the Port sector. It is affiliated to the Central Organization of Trade Unions, Kenya (COTU-K) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).

The Union currently has about 5,000 members drawn from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

Achievements

Through the unwavering leadership of the current General Secretary, Mr. Simon Sang, the  Union has persistently driven a hard bargain during CBA negotiations, the epitome of  which was during the 2008-2009 CBA which saw unionizable employees of KPA receive a  record 40% salary increase. In 2011, the Union notched yet another milestone when it  compelled KPA management to convert the terms of service of over 3,000 unionizable  employees from contract to permanent, leaving an indelible mark on the global drive by  ILO towards eradicating precarious work.
